Serbia: Terrorist attack outside Israeli embassy brings country to highest security level
The perpetrator, who according to authorities supported ISIS, attacked a Gendarmerie officer with knives shouting "Allahu Akbar" — Government activated maximum terrorist threat level nationwide

Serbia was placed under a state of maximum alert following the terrorist attack that occurred during the early hours outside the Embassy of Israel in Belgrade. A juvenile perpetrator attacked a member of the Serbian Gendarmerie (Žandarmerija) with two knives, while according to Serbian authorities he shouted "Allahu Akbar" during the assault. The police officer managed to neutralize him in self-defense, but the incident led the government to immediately activate the highest security level across the entire country.

The attack occurred minutes after midnight

According to acting Interior Minister Ivica Dačić, the incident unfolded approximately fifteen minutes after midnight in the Dedinje district of Belgrade, where the Israeli diplomatic mission is located. Authorities report that the assailant, a minor whose identity had not yet been confirmed during the initial hours of the investigation, approached the Gendarmerie guard post and attacked the officer on duty with two knives. The gendarme sustained face injuries during the struggle, but managed to use his service weapon and neutralize the attacker. His medical condition is characterized as stable, and according to officials, he faces no life-threatening danger.Haos_u_Beogradu.webp

Authorities link perpetrator to Islamic State

Information released by the Serbian Ministry of Interior sparked particular concern. According to acting Interior Minister Dačić, the young assailant was already known to security services and was under surveillance. Serbian authorities maintain that he had expressed support and allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS), while personal social media accounts he used displayed the characteristic black flag and other symbols of the jihadist group. This information led authorities to classify the incident as a terrorist attack rather than an isolated criminal act, triggering a comprehensive counter-terrorism investigation.Haos_u_Beogradu_1.webp

Serbia transitions to "red" alert

The government reacted immediately without delay. A few hours after the attack, the decision was taken to activate the so-called "red level" of terrorist threat, the highest foreseen by Serbian security protocols. In practice, this entails an increased presence of special forces on the streets, enhanced guarding of diplomatic missions, shopping centers, railway stations, bus terminals, and other critical infrastructure facilities. At the same time, orders have been issued to intensify security checks at locations where large numbers of citizens gather, reflecting a heightened national security posture.

Why the attack causes particular concern

The fact that the target was the Israeli embassy adds extraordinary weight to the case. The Middle East remains in a state of intense instability, while several European countries have periodically reinforced security measures around Israeli diplomatic missions and Jewish targets. Serbian authorities appear to treat the incident as a potential component of a broader security risk rather than a simple isolated event. For this reason, the decision to transition to the maximum alert level was taken almost immediately following the attack.Haos_u_Beogradu_2.webp

Ongoing investigations and heightened readiness

Investigations continue with the objective of determining whether the perpetrator acted alone or maintained contacts with broader extremist networks. At the same time, the entire Serbian security apparatus remains in a state of elevated readiness. For Belgrade, the attack is not merely another act of violence. It constitutes the event that brought the country to its highest level of alarm and brought concerns over terrorist threats back to the forefront in the heart of the Balkans.
